Oregon became a state in 1859 on Valentine's Day. Economic growth was very slow on the coastal region, but Portland began to thrive as a shipping port. Once the railroads connected Portland to San Francisco, the city became the economic center of the state. Today, the economy in Oregon still revolves around agriculture, though electronics and tourism have also picked up over the years. Tourism is the third largest source of income in the state and many people find themselves drawn to the unique aspects of Oregon. Portland is also home to the Lan Su Chinese Garden. This year round garden was built to look like an authentic Ming Dynasty garden. There are covered walkways, bridges and even a picturesque lake in this urban oasis. The gardens were built by artists from Portland's sister city, Suzhou. Visitors can take tours with narrators, or self-guided tours with the help of audio recordings. The attraction often has special events including summer concerts and a large celebration around the Chinese New Year.
